Thames Water has apologised to drivers affected by a huge hole in the road in Biggin Hill.

The hole appeared in Main Road at the top of Saltbox Hill on Thursday (September 6) and remains unfixed.

Repair work has not yet started because the size of the hole remains unknown.

A spokeswoman for Thames Water explained: "The repair work is needing careful planning as it’s unclear how big the hole is and, for the safety of our team, we can’t move our machinery into place until we know how far it extends."

The water company said it would be using radar equipment to establish the stability of the road before beginning repairs, and it was sorry for any disruption to drivers.

Bromley Council is also aware of what it described as a sinkhole and said initial investigations suggest the void was caused by a burst water pipe.

This is the second hole to affect a road in Bromley recently, with Crofton Lane in Petts Wood suffering from a huge gap in the road.

The hole, which resulted in two weeks of disturbance, was caused by a collapsed sewer and was first reported on August 24.

Thames Water has since fixed the problem and apologised for the situation which resulted in two weeks of buses not stopping in Petts Wood.

At the time one local said: "Morning commuters have no choice but to organise taxis to get them to Petts Wood station for early connections to London.

"I have seen a number of people struggling with shopping and children walking from Bromley."
