X Factor star and 80s pop singer Sinitta's plans for her new Putney home have enraged her new neighbours, after she installed "colossal" air conditioning units they claim will be noisy, ugly and bad for the environment.

Sinitta, real name Sinitta Malone, bought the four storey detached Victorian house in Colinette Road last year.

The singer has been seen being dropped off by close friend Simon Cowell in the West Putney street.

In June, neighbours were "amazed" to discover she had surreptitiously installed two industrial-sized air conditioning units at the bottom of her garden, inches from their patios and summer houses.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "It's shocking. This is not central London. It's a family area and people will not take kindly to this noise spoiling the enjoyment of their gardens."

She said the units would be used to heat and cool the house and could potentially run 24 hours a day.

Ms Malone and her husband, Andy Willner, paid a seven figure sum for the house and are redesigning it with an extended balcony, ballroom, gym and wine tasting room.

Neighbours suggested they put the cooling units in their basement, but the couple reportedly rejected this idea because of "lack of space".

Sinitta's spokesman said she had bought the house for a relative and would not be living there, but refused to comment further.

Sixty residents in Colinette Road and Malbrook Road, which backs on to it, signed a petition against the units.

Wandsworth Council told Ms Malone she would have to build a brick shed for them to reduce noise and heat emissions, which would require planning.

But, in July, neighbours found builders digging under the soil of their gardens while planning permission was still pending. Council officers came to Colinette Road and ordered them to stop but they reportedly carried on installing the units and doing plumbing work.

Another complaint has been the potential carbon emissions from the 60kw units, which are said to be larger than those used to cool Putney Exchange.

The council's planning committee is due to make a final decision on September 13.
