Crystal Palace new boy Besian Idrizaj has snubbed a chance to meet up with the Austrian national side to concentrate on settling in at Selhurst Park.

The new signing from Liverpool looked lively after being introduced as a second-half substitute on Saturday after completing his 12-month loan deal from the Anfield club on Thursday.

And Idrizaj, who made seven Championship appearances during a loan spell at Luton Town last season, revealed he rejected the chance to link up with his Austrian compatriots to concentrate on getting used to his new surroundings.

"I was talking with my manager from the national team and I told him I thought I needed to settle in here at Palace, said Idrizaj "I had the same problem at Luton because when I went there I spent two weeks away with Austria and I didn't want to do that again.

He added: "When I settle then hopefully we will see good things from me."

Idrizaj, who scored a hat-trick in Liverpool's opening pre-season friendly against Wrexham in July, is facing a fight for regular first-team football with Clinton Morrison, James Scowcroft, Dougie Freedman and new signing Paul Dickov all vying for the two slots up front.

But the Austrian says he will not lose any sleep over the daunting prospect.

He said: "Football comes with competition and you have to handle that.

"I'm still young and I can learn off all the players around me and hopefully it can make me a better player.

"It's up to the manager if he wants to start with me. And I have to work hard in training and hopefully start the game against Norwich."

The 19-year-old insisted his time at Luton has left him in good stead for the hustle and bustle of Championship football.

"My experience with Luton was good because it wasn't the case that we were just playing in mid-table we were fighting against relegation, said the Austrian.

"I learned a lot from that experience and I've taken a lot with me from my time at Luton."

And as long as he can secure some regular starts, the Austrian frontman says he can hit double figures in the Palace goal charts this season.

He said: "Every striker sets himself targets, hopefully if I can get a fixed number of starts then I hope to score 10 goals this season."
