A major regeneration scheme which will see 440 new homes and a supermarket in Hackbridge is launching this autumn.

Becoming part of what is being claimed to be the UK’s first “truly sustainable suburb”, New Mill Quarter is on the former Felnex Trading Estate in London Road.

The development’s first phase will house 97 one and two-bedroom apartments, alongside a three-bedroom duplex, due for completion in May 2019.

A doctors’ surgery and on-site Lidl store have been confirmed by residential developers Barratt London, while prices for some one-bedroom apartments begin at just over £305,000.

The scheme has faced some opposition after being granted planning permission by Sutton Council during September 2016.

At the time of its approval, Lysanne Horrox, chair of the Hackbridge and Beddington Corner Neighbourhood Development Group said: “Whilst we understand the need for more houses, this should not be at the detriment of existing residents.

“This scheme could have been altered to alleviate our main concerns.”

Some of the fears raised by the group involved the “increased scale” of one part of the plan, as well as some of the buildings’ heights.

But now it has been confirmed by Barratt London that the scheme will be launched this September.

Open green space is “central to the ethos at New Mill Quarter”, they say, and residents will have their own private outdoor area.

Most apartments will be located around central courtyards and a new green space – Hackbridge Gardens – will be “at the heart” of the development.

Barratt London sales director Pam Reardon said: “New Mill Quarter is an exciting new regeneration scheme in the up-and-coming suburb of Hackbridge, and is ideally located for some of London’s most popular lifestyle and leisure activities.

“Just a 15-minute drive from Croydon, residents need not to venture far to enjoy the array of food and retail outlets at Boxpark.

“They will also be able to take advantage of the wealth of amenities that the new Westfield shopping centre will bring, which is due to open in 2022.

“With ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ schools on the doorstep, we expect New Mill Quarter to be hugely popular with families as well as young professionals working nearby or in central London.”

One and two-bedroom apartments at the development are currently available from £305,995 to £364,995, according to the official website.
