Shocking images have revealed the enormous amount of fly-tipped rubbish that was dumped in a North Cheam Aldi site – the second time in months.

Footage published this week (August 21) revealed several fridges, plastic chairs, and broken furniture among the waste inside Evans Autos in London Road.

Police were called on August 14 to reports of travellers having parked up in the old car dealership before leaving behind a huge fly-tip.

But this is now the second time since April where this has happened as the German supermarket giant has been criticised over the site’s security.

Cllr James McDermott-Hill said: “It's dreadful. I don't know how the hell they managed to get the stuff in, but it's clearly a huge eyesore and a massive inconvenience to the local community.”

He said he has approached Aldi chief executive Giles Hurley but is awaiting on the latest response to the situation.

The Nonsuch ward councillor added: “Essentially what I sent across to Giles Hurley was along the lines of, 'Look, they've obviously got in the past couple months twice now. The security, from where I'm standing, doesn't seem to really be up to scratch.'

“What they need to do is have more robust measures in place that will prevent this happening again in the future. It's just down the road from where Victoria House is, they've got two very heavy duty boulders that are behind the gates. That, so far, has prevented any sort of vehicle trying to ram it or force entry.

“Although it is private land, and Sutton Council can't do anything about it directly, really the ball is in Aldi's court to sort their security operation out. The way things are going, you can't just let things continue as they are. They've got to improve their measures that they've got there currently.”

Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Scully believes Aldi “did not secure the site well enough” from the last incursion in April, as they “simply gated it with a padlock”.

Mr Scully added: “Aldi has stated that they have paid for additional security near the site, but residents have said that they have not seen evidence of this. Like with other incursions, I have been encouraging people to report and all criminal activity to the police.

“Residents have raised concerns that travellers get away with blatant criminal behaviour, but the police have insisted no-one is above the law and the problem they have is with people often sharing their experiences on social media, but not actually reporting it to the police for investigation.”

Sutton Guardian has approached Aldi for further comment.
