A former jockey has launched a new exhibition at Bourne Hall which pays tribute to the horse-racing community of the Epsom Downs.

Caroline Baldock has created the exhibition, called In the Shaking of the Dew, after one of her poems, which will run until September 1 at Bourne Hall in Ewell.

Mrs Baldock said she started taking photographs of the Downs three years ago when she gave up galloping in the morning.

The 70-year-old said: “The photographs are all about the early morning gallop, and they are so varied. The racing horse is a beautiful horse to photograph.

“The six poems in the exhibition are all about and to do with the Epsom community which I have loved all my life.”

The former jockey, who aspires to open a Museum of the Horse in Epsom, said she hopes the exhibition will educate people about the animal and the industry.

She added: “I want to use exhibitions to teach people about the horse, the history of the horse and what’s it’s like to be in the horsing industry.”

Mrs Baldock, who has been a member of the Epsom horse-racing community for decades, said she was one of the first professional female flat jockeys in the country.

She has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Anne Finch, Louie Dingwall and Reg Akehurst.
