Buildings including offices near East Croydon station owned by Network Rail will be demolished. Plans for the demolition of Stonewest House in Lambert’s Place were given the green light by Croydon Council on Monday (July 23). In June 2015, planning permission was given to build  a five-storey block of 25 flats on the site, but the permission expired last month. In the latest application, a letter from Network Rail states: “The existing buildings and structures located within the site are in poor condition. “The demolition of the buildings and structures is required in order to make the site safe, secure, environmentally acceptable and to reduce liabilities.” The office site is made up of a number of buildings including a large warehouse next to the railway line. A spokesman for Network Rail said the site will make up part of the Croydon Area Remodelling Scheme. The plan is to increase the number of platforms at East Croydon from six to eight, to reduce congestion coming from Brighton. With the demolition of Stonewest House, working hours are set to be restricted from 7.30am-5pm Monday to Friday and 8am-2pm on Saturdays. The application adds that where possible, noisy operations will happen between 8am and 4pm daily to reduce the impact of residents in the cul-de-sac. The plans show that all building will be demolished to ground level which includes asbestos removal. The work will also include filling in two redundant underground fuel tanks of 4,500 litres each with slurry. The demolition must take place within five years.
