Residents have expressed opposition towards major plans to knock down a stretch of buildings before the construction of 59 new homes.

Crown Hill Surrey Developments is in talks with Sutton Council over the proposals, for Benhill Road, expected to be submitted later this year.

However, some people have since made their concerns clear in a bid to get their voices heard before the next stages commence.

In a letter, Ian Lambert, a Benhill Road resident for 46 years, said: “The design of the development is completely out of character with existing buildings in Benhill Road.

“The height and design of the proposal is far more intrusive than the current semi-detached buildings and will severely reduce light.

“Despite the provision of one parking space per property, the addition of so many flats in such a small area will undoubtedly create traffic and parking problems, and with it increase in noise and pollution.

“This is evidenced by previous developments where building regulations have not adhered to and residents do not make proper use of their parking bays.

“In addition, many commercial vehicles from surrounding roads already see this road as their car park.”

The letter was sent to councillors Ali Mirhashem, David Bartolucci, and Richard Clare, as well as MPs Paul Scully and Tom Brake.

Mr Lambert fears that, during the demolition and building period, residents will “suffer from the noise, dust, and disruption” potentially caused by construction.

He added the deadline for feedback before August 7 is “unrealistic” and believes it is “totally unacceptable”.

John Fraser, also of Benhill Road, has lived in the area for 25 years and also sent an email to the same councillors and MPs in a letter seen by Sutton Guardian.

Among his concerns, he cited parking, disruption, noise, lack of notice, the building’s design and services.

He said: “Already parking is a nightmare and it will get even worse. Not enough parking will – or has – been provided for the new development.

“[The building] doesn’t fit in with the surrounding landscape, will stick out like a sore thumb and is an eyesore.

“If it does go ahead, residents directly affected by any aspect should be awarded compensation for the disruption and inconvenience.

“[The development] will put extra pressure on already oversubscribed school places and doctors’ surgeries.”

Crown Hill Surrey Developments wants to demolish the existing buildings between 94 and 108 Benhill Road, as well as 94a Benhill Road.

The new development would include 59 new homes with car and cycle parking spaces at the rear of the property at basement level.

People are being encouraged to submit their feedback to the developers before August 7.

Of the 59 new homes, there would be 38 with one bed, 12 with two, and nine with three.

It is currently unclear whether they would be available under an affordable housing scheme.
