The hundredth BT InLinkUK kiosk in the country has been switched on in Clapham Junction, Wandsworth.

The unit has been installed on St John's Hill, near Clapham Junction station, replacing redundant BT payphone kiosks.

According to BT, the InLinkUK units provide the UK’s fastest free public Wi-Fi service and free phone calls.

The kiosk offers a range of digital services, include mobile device charging, access to maps and directions and the BT Phone Book app.

It also has real time information relating to the area, such as weather forecasts and public transport announcements.

Since their inception last year, BT figures show that more than 49,000 people have subscribed to its WIFI service and users have made more than 305,000 calls.

The kiosk is free to use as each unit is funded by advertising.

Wandsworth community services spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said: “These impressive multi-media hubs offer the public a really excellent range of free services and I am delighted they’ve arrived in Wandsworth.

“Their introduction means that residents and visitors to our borough can now enjoy free phone calls, free mega-fast wi-fi and access to travel updates, maps, local guides plus wide ranging information on local public services.

“Their sleek, slim, aluminium-style design are a much more useful and attractive sight than the now largely redundant pay phone kiosks they are replacing, none of which are of the famous traditional red Gilbert Scott design. And with every single InLink hub replacing two payphone kiosks it also means a lot less clutter on our streets.”
