A school in Wimbledon has been handed a gold award by the Woodland Trust after pupils gained points by completing various trust activities.

Donhead Preparatory School, Edge Hill, took part in the Woodland Trust Green Tree School Award, an educational initiative, which saw pupils visiting local woods, reducing their carbon emissions and setting a recylcing challenge.

Catherine Hitchcock, head of georgaphy, said: "We have had a tremendous response from the boys to the Woodland Trust Activites.

"The challenges seet have enabled us, as a community to further explore our local environment and to identify ways in which we can protect our natural resources and woodland areas."

Almost 10,000 schools have signed up to the Green Tree School initiative since it was launched in 2008 and schools gain points for completing activities, progressing through bronze, silver and gold levels until reaching the platinum title.

Woodland Trust schools and communities engagement manager Karen Letten said: "We'd like to congratulate the school on its well-deserved gold award.

"Nothing beats outdoor learning and we hope the children got hands on, used their imaginations and above all had lots of fun completing their chosen challenges.

"We hope many more teachers will follow Donhead School's lead, sign up to the award and help us continue to create the next generation of woodland custodians, instilling a passion for the environment for the rest of their lives."
