Crystal Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni has revealed he is still none the wiser about who will wear the number one jersey this season.

The departure of Gabor Kiraly to Burnley has left manager Peter Taylor with a choice between Speroni and Scott Flinders.

And with just three days until the start of the new Championship season, it seems Taylor is making the pair sweat on who will face Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday.

The Eagles boss has hinted that Speroni, who had a run of games towards the end of last season, will be his first choice, but the Argentine is taking nothing for granted.

Speroni said: "The manager has not named the starting 11 yet, so we are both fighting for a place. Scott is a great keeper so, if I get a chance to play, I will have to be at my best to keep my place.

"But I'm looking forward to it and I want to be number one. I'm confident I can keep my place if I get my chance - that's what I work every day for."

With the lack of transfer activity at the club during the close season, not many pundits are tipping Palace for a return to the top-flight.

However, the 28-year-old insists the lack of hype surrounding SE25 this season does not concern the squad.

"It doesn't matter if we are tipped for promotion or not. The important thing is how we feel about our team," he said.

"We are in great condition and have had a brilliant pre-season campaign.

"I think we are going to start the season well."
