Church Street has re-opened six days after falling masonry seriously injured a mother and her child.

Your Local Guardian:

The accident, which happened on January 4 at about 12.50pm, could have been fatal to anyone who happened to be standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Epsom Guardian user Benedikt said: "Only a few seconds separated our walk past the building from the falling masonry which could have killed us."

The injured woman’s son was bleeding from his head; they were both taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said today (January 11) that the boy had been discharged from hospital.

A spokeman from Epsom Council said: "The dangerous structure has now been dealt with and it is now the building owner’s responsibility to carry out further inspections and ensure the building is sound.

"When this is complete (timeframe will depend on what is found) the scaffolding will be removed.

"The road will need to be closed again but this will be achieved under the normal temporary road closure process with the County Council.

"Meanwhile, we are co-ordinating with the Health & Safety Executive in the investigation to why individuals were injured."

It is still not known what caused the collapse, but Epsom Guardian users have speculated it could be related to the storms or previous damage.

Peter Mugridge said: “I seem to remember that when this building was nearly new – about 15 to 20 years ago – it was struck by a runaway car at the base of the exact same area that collapsed.

"While I doubt that this would be relevant so many years later, it is certainly an interesting coincidence."
