Wimbledon Food Festival guests must have breathed a sigh of relief on seeing the ice cream stand at this year's event, as temperatures over the bank holiday weekend soared to 27 degrees across the capital.

The annual food celebration picked the perfect weekend as Wimbledon Park attendees were greeted with sunshine at every moment of the three day event.

Champagne sorbet, Peruvian street food, French crepes, cheeses, gluten free and vegan snacks and South American desserts were just some of the dishes on offer at the charity fundraising event.

Masterchef finalist Steve Kielty, baker Martha Collison (The Great British Bake Off), Selina Periampillai from Taste Mauritius, Maunika Gowardhan, Indian chef and author, Chika Russell from Chika’s Foods and Ray’s Street Food, gave demonstrations in the Talks & Tastings Hub. Children’s activities included face painting and a storyteller.

Another highlight was the infamous “Omelette Challenge”, first seen earlier this month in Centre Court Shopping Centre for the festival's launch. Members of the public took part to see who could make an omelette in the fastest time.

The Mayor of Merton, Cllr Marsie Skeete and her Consort, Yeuton Crandon, toured the Festival on Saturday. The pair met local producers and sampled various dishes such as Khao Suey – a Pakistani dish, originating in Burma, comprising noodles, creamy coconut curry, spicy meat, chilli sauce and a crunchy topping and Heavenly Sausages’ giant Polish hotdogs.

At the Craft Beer Cab Company, with 18 different beers to choose from, Mr Crandon tried the Wimbledon-inspired strawberries and cream beer.

If beer wasn't enough, visitors could create their own gin at specialist stand The Ginistry and sampled a wide variety of gins such as Silverback Gin from Gorilla Spirits (£1 of each bottle is donated to The Gorilla Organisation charity) and Mews Gin, made in East Horsley, Surrey with 11 different botanicals such as juniper, liquorice fruit and lavender.

The Mayor was shown a local gin distilled at Abbey Mills, Tooting.

A range of whisky based drinks from O’Donnell Moonshine also helped quench the thirst of sun-wearied guests - with various flavours including nut and chocolate and roasted apple, which can be drunk as a liqueur or in coffee.

Oonagh Moulton, Councillor of Wimbledon Park Ward, joined the Mayor on her tour.

She said: “It’s great to have delicious treats, street food and artisan products from across the world in Wimbledon Park. It’s wonderful to see the Omelette Challenge and cooking demonstrations in the Hub. It’s a lovely ambience with the band playing and children’s entertainment.”

A Taste of Bulgaria displayed a range of raw honey made with different ingredients such as chocolate, chillies and cinnamon, as well as clay cooking dishes which can be used on the hob and in the oven.

Pudsey the Bear also attended the event, which was in aid of Children in Need. £1 per person was donated to the charity.
