A new Thai restaurant will open on the site of Cafe Rouge in Wimbledon Village next month.

It will be the first branch of Giggling Squid in London, although the brand has been popping up in locations such as Brighton, Bristol and Brentwood since 2002.

Thai-born Pranee Laurillard said she had been looking to open a branch in the village for "a long time".

She said: "It's quite exciting for us. We have always liked the area and looked around there a lot. It's close to London but it has its own right to be a town. It has a local feel and is very charming."

The new restaurant in High Street Wimbledon will be located in the centre of the village, opposite Carluccio's, and will be open from lunch to dinner.

Pranee lives with husband and business partner, Andy, and her three children in Surrey. The restaurant is named after the couple's youngest son, Henry, who they nicknamed the 'Giggling Squid' when he was three-years-old.

Mrs Laurillard said: "The kids are proud of the name because they have a part. Henry, who is now 9, was very wriggly when he was younger and when he was happy he would giggle a lot."

The menu features authentic Thai recipes that Mrs Laurillard said she enjoys at home. Although Mrs Laurillard enjoys the spicier dishes, she says there are also milder recipes and there is "something for everyone".

There is also a children's menu, tried and tested on the couple's own children.

A launch night will be held later next month after building work has completed.
