Large swathes of the country are due to be hit with "thundery downpours" over the next two days.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for rain covering the East Midlands, East Anglia, London and the South East coast.

It said some parts of the country could get 40mm of rain in four hours, with the weather warnings lasting into Wednesday.

In London, the warning lasts between 3am and 9pm today (Tuesday, August 8). Temperatures are forecast to be between 14 and 17 degrees Celsius.

"Heavy showers will develop during Tuesday. Where these occur they are likely to be slow-moving and perhaps thundery," a Met Office spokesperson said.

"Some areas may miss the showers entirely whilst others could see two to three hours of heavy rain.

"Where this occurs some disruption is possible such as localised flooding of roads."
