A Thurrock based orchestral group have received a £10,000 grant for their latest project called ‘Composers of the Great War.’

Woolmer’s Philharmonic Orchestra, who have received the grant, are researching the lives of three major British composers during the First World War.

These composers are Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, who most notably performed ‘The Planets’, and Delius.

Working with Woolmer Music Group, with the information they gather from their research, they will produce an album of the composer’s music which will be used to create a final exhibition and recital.

Hannah Woolmer, violinist and founder of Woolmer Philharmonic Orchestra and Woolmer Music Group, said: “It’s great to be at the forefront of cultural growth in Thurrock.

"We have high quality, professional artists but the vision of each project comes from local volunteers.

"The WPO are affiliated with the WMG and bringing the two organisations together is a unique opportunity.”

Woolmer’s Philharmonic Orchestra have received the National Lottery Grant which comes from the Heritage Lottery fund.

The orchestra is largely overseen and run by Thurrock residents and volunteers.
