The Conservatives and Residents' Association both retained their Surrey County Council seats in Epsom and Ewell borough, while the Tories cleaned up county-wide.

The Conservatives maintained a big majority, winning 61 of 81 divisions across Surrey, increasing their number of seats by three, while UKIP was wiped out.

In opposition the Liberal Democrats held on to their nine seats, and Labour and the Greens retained one division apiece.

Four residents’ association councillors and four independent councillors also won seats in the elections.

Tina Mountain edged out Residents’ Association (RA) councillor Clive Woodbridge to retain her Epsom Town & Downs seat, where the turnout was 37 per cent.

The turnout was the same in Epsom West, where Tory Bernie Muir narrowly beat the Liberal Democrats’ Clare Clark by just 74 seats.

Cllr Muir stood in the seat previously held by fellow Conservative Karan Persand.

Mr Persand was defeated by the head of the borough's Local Committee chair Eber Kington (Residents' Association) for the seat in Ewell Court, Auriol & Cuddington.

Residents’ Association councillor John Beckett held his seat in Ewell – with his 2,579 votes nearly double that of the other candidates in the division.

His fellow RA member, Jan Mason also held onto her seat in West Ewell, winning more than double the number of votes as her nearest competitor.

Elsewhere, council leader David Hodge held onto his seat in Warlingham, Labour’s only candidate Robert Evans retained Stanwell & Stanwell Moor and Liberal Democrat leader Hazel Watson won in Dorking Hills.

Bernie Muir, victorious in Epsom West said: "I am delighted to have been elected - especially in a marginal division that has traditionally been a four way spilt.

"I have listened carefully to the many people I have met during the course of this campaign and am fully committed to representing them.

"To that end, I have made the necessary arrangements, since my election, in order to be able to devote my efforts on a full time basis to our local communities and Surrey as a whole."

John Beckett, who was re-elected in Ewell Village, Nonsuch and Stoneleigh told the Epsom Guardian: "Like my fellow RA colleagues the message was clear on the doorstep, residents don't feel Surrey County Council is good value for money and issues raised with me on the doorstep included the objection to the streetlights being switched off.

"They felt that if the decision is not going to be reversed then they should be switched off from 1am not midnight.

"They are very concerned at the lack of money being made available at the local level to deal with highway issues in Epsom and Ewell. The majority of feedback from residents centred around roads and footpaths.

"Although the next four years will be tough financially, I will fight for resources to be spent in Epsom and Ewell and for the residents of my division."

His fellow RA councillor, Eber Kington, said he was "delighted" at being re-elected in Ewell Court, Auriol and Cuddington. He added: "I received a very good reception on the doorstep and it confirmed my belief in the importance of responding quickly and effectively to residents’ enquiries and concerns.

"I put before them my record and what I felt needed to be challenged at County Hall.  I received very clear messages on the doorstep - residents are opposed to both the midnight switch-off of our streetlights and the huge 78 per cent cut to the local highway budget

"I will therefore make it a priority to raise these issues at County Hall and to get them reversed."

Tina Mountain said she was "honoured" to retain her seat in Epsom Town and Downs. She said: "I look forward to completing projects that I have worked on for the last four years and embracing those that will evolve during the next four.

"As Conservative group leader I am thrilled that Epsom West is also firmly in Conservative care and whilst we cannot change projects already started, we will work closely to ensure the interests of Epsom residents are a priority."
