The head of Merton police has left after less than five months in the top job.

Detective Chief Superintendent Theresa Breen began at Merton on October 17, 2016, but has now left to begin a job within the national counter terrorism headquarters.

Her successor, Chief Superintendent Steve Wallace, began his first day as borough commander today, Monday, March 6.

Supt Breen said: “I have been asked to move to a specialist national post due to my previous experience working in counter terrorism departments.

“It is with a heavy heart that I leave Merton and have loved being the head of such a proactive and caring team that often puts the residents above their own selves.

“In the Metropolitan Police, we often move to use our skills to best serve the service, and the post that I am going to fill is a much needed one.

“I have enjoyed every minute of my time here and would stay if I could, but know that leaving the borough in the expert hands of Supt Wallace is the right move.”

Chief Supt Wallace said: “After nearly 18 months in Merton, I take over as borough commander today.

“I will do all I can to make the borough hostile territory for criminals.

“I am very keen to update the public on all the good work we do – and listen to and act on their concerns. We use email, Facebook and Twitter on a daily basis to do this, and really welcome this support.”

Detective Superintendent Breen has worked in the police for 28 years, with previous postings in Hillingdon, Wembley, Notting Hill and Westminster.

She spent four years in the National Crime Squad and three years serving with Surrey Police before coming to Merton.
