People not indicating when they should annoys London motorists the most, according to a study by YourParkingSpace.

Out of the drivers polled, 62 per cent said not indicating annoyed them, while 60 per cent said they hated people talking on the phone.

People not being adept at getting into a space got to motorists as well, with just under half citing bad parking as an irritant.

Traffic jams annoyed Londoners nearly 10 per cent more than the rest of the UK while slow drivers annoyed them a lot less than country overall- 24 per cent compared to 42.

This could be because everyone is forced to drive slowly in London because of traffic jams.

However, getting angry on the road is not in people’s interest with 66 per cent of traffic fatalities being caused by “aggressive driving”.

Road rage is a common occurrence and people seem to get a lot more incensed behind the wheel than they would otherwise.

According to Psychology Today, aggression is a predominately male problem.

However, it says road rage is “the rare time when male and female aggression is on display in near-equal amounts”.

PT says: “For many men, aggression is supposed to be overt; for women it is more covert.

“But put them both behind the wheel, late for something, angry about something else, and in no mood for courtesy, and their behaviours will compare.”

Why does everyone get so irate then?

Factors put forward include a need for control or that driving has a lot to do with instinct and the primitive part of the brain takes over.

Ego can come into it as well with a need for “superiority” making drivers see red.

The fact that there is a barrier between you and others can make people feel protected and more free to behave badly.
