An independent charity that helps Epsom Hospital purchase life-saving medical equipment has been recognised for their sterling work.

The Epsom Medical Equipment Fund (EMEF) has been named as a finalist in the BBC Surrey Community Heroes Award.

EMEF’s latest endeavour, raising over £50,000 for a new ultrasound scanner, was just one of the many pieces of medical equipment they have helped the hospital buy over the years.

The Fund has raised £4 million since it was founded in 1979 and was nominated by members of the public for the award where it has been shortlisted in the ‘Fundraiser’ category.

Bess Harding, one of the founding members, said: “We are so thrilled and honoured to be named as one of the finalists in the BBC Surrey Community Heroes Awards.

“It is very special knowing that we have been nominated by members of the public.

“We are fortunate to receive a huge amount of support from local people, who not only give money to the Fund but are often so generous with their time as well.

“I am very proud of the work that the Fund does and, whether we win on the night or not, this recognition means so much.”

Director of Communications at Epsom and St Helier hospitals Tim Hamilton said: “We are incredibly grateful to Epsom Medical Equipment Fund for their support and continuing generosity.

“The equipment that they have provided to our hospital has made, and continues to make, a real difference to our patients, visitors and staff.

“On behalf of the trust, I would like to congratulate Bess and everyone involved with the Fund on securing this fantastic recognition for their ongoing hard work.”

Overall winners will be announced at the BBC Surrey Community Heroes Awards ceremony on Monday, November 28.
