A man has died after plunging from an upper floor at Debenhams department store Sutton town centre.

He is thought to have jumped from the top level of the four-floor shop, in the St Nicholas Centre, in front of horrified shoppers this afternoon.

Police and paramedics were called to reports of a man falling from height at the shopping centre at 4.19pm today.

Debenhams has since shut and been cordoned off by police.

The man's death is not being treated as suspicious, said police.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 4:19pm to an incident at an address on St Nicholas Way, Sutton.

"We sent an ambulance crew, two single responders in cars and an incident response officer to the scene. Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance also attended.

"Sadly, despite extensive efforts of our crews, a man died at the scene."

Tearful Debenhams staff were seen leaving the department store after being interviewed by police.

A worker from a nearby shop told the Sutton Guardian: "I was told that somebody jumped from the top floor in the building, but I do not know anything else."

Another said: "Someone jumped from the top floor and died - that's all we know." 

Several police and London Ambulance Service cars were parked outside the shopping centre this evening.

Sutton police posted on Twitter just after 5pm: "Incident in Debenhams St Nicholas Centre, Sutton.

"Police and Emergency Services are dealing routinely public advised no cause for concern".

A woman who was shopping in the store at the time of the incident said her son saw what happened.

She said: "I still am shocked my children were with me and saw what happened.

"I was helping my daughter try some shoes when the lady came and said can you please tell your son 'don't watch'.

"When [I] saw my son watching I felt really bad I didn't know what to say.

"He said to me I will have nightmares tonight. I'm trying to do the best for him to forget."
