A Sutton councillor who resigned last week over "financial allegations" has been arrested by police.

Alan Salter was a Liberal Democrat councillor for Carshalton Central until stepping down from his post on Monday, June 13.

The 66-year-old, who was first elected in 2010, was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of fraud by false representation.

He has been bailed early August pending further police investigation.

Sutton Council said today that allegations were related to Mr Salter's "personal financial affairs"

A spokesman said: “Sutton Council has a clear process for investigating allegations against councillors under the Member Code of Conduct and will investigate any complaints made.

“Regarding Alan Salter, the allegations are, so far as we know, to do with his personal financial affairs.”

The Liberal Democrats said Mr Salter was “seeking legal advice” on the allegation.

A statement posted on the Sutton Lib Dems website on last Tuesday read: "Alan Salter has resigned from the council following financial allegations made against him.

"He is seeking legal advice on the allegations made."

His resignation will lead to a by-election in Carshalton Central on July 28.
