The rain has been held at bay for a couple of hours, with glorious sunshine and highs of 28C forecast in south-east London and north Kent for one more day.

Wide-spread heavy rain, which the Met Office originally predicted between 1pm and 9pm today (June 7), has now been postponed until this evening – giving us a bit longer to enjoy the sunshine.

Showers are now not expected until 6pm in Greenwich, and 9pm in Bexley.

The weather experts have foreseen a hot day with cloud building throughout the afternoon.

Heavy rain is expected to fall later today, perhaps turning thundery in places.

It's good news for now - but you may still get wet this evening

Meanwhile, a yellow weather warning is still in place for Kent, Greater London and the surrounding areas.

The Met Office’s Chief Forecaster warns: “Heavy, thundery showers will turn locally torrential with the risk of hail on Tuesday afternoon and evening across parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

“Whilst most places will miss the worst, please be aware of the risk of localised flooding.”

There could be up to 20mm of rain fall in just one hour, and 50mm in a few hours.

The phenomenon is caused by warm, moist air coming over from the continent, which will be made more unstable by a system coming over it from the Atlantic.

It should be another warm day tomorrow, with highs of 25C but scattered showers throughout the day.

The sunshine then returns on Thursday, before a cloudier weekend.

Top temperatures should stick at around 20C, with a warmer June hopefully here to stay.
