Two Croydon councillors have been promoted to the front-bench in a cabinet reshuffle by leader Tony Newman.

Hamida Ali, who represents the Woodside ward, has been appointed as cabinet member for communities, safety and justice after previously serving as deputy.

She replaces Mark Watson, who will take over the economy and jobs portfolio from soon-to-be deputy mayor Toni Letts.

Cllr Ali had most recently acted as deputy to Councillor Simon Hall in finance and treasury, and was heavily involved in the council's Fairness Commission and the congress debate on tackling domestic violence.

West Thornton councillor Stuart King has been promoted to cabinet member in transport and environment, after previously serving as deputy to Cllr Stuart Collins on the Don’t Mess With Croydon campaign.

Cllr King's role will be expanded to "tackle a wider environmental remit to include issues such as air quality,” said the council.

He replaces Kathy Bee, who a council spokeswoman said was “stepping down” from the cabinet.

The reshuffle comes following a meeting of the full Labour group last night, at which they welcomed their newest colleague Callton Young, who comfortably won a byelection in West Thornon on Thursday.

Cllr Newman said: “I’m really pleased to be welcoming Hamida and Stuart to the cabinet. I have been really impressed with their work in helping to deliver some of the administration’s key priorities and I’m looking forward to working with them through the exciting changes ahead of us.

"We’ve had a really successful two years, and I’d like to thank Kathy and Toni for their excellent contribution and experience in helping to push forward with our manifesto. But we still have so much more to do and I believe we have the right team in place to continue to deliver the best for our residents at such an important time for Croydon.”

The remaining cabinet positions remain unchanged.
