A gunman followed a shopper laden with bags home after he accidentally saw an attempted shooting, it is claimed.

The terrified 25-year-old had been doing his weekly shop at Sainsbury’s in Colliers Wood on Saturday, when he says he came face-to-face with a hoody-wearing gunman on his walk home.

The shopper, who did not want to be identified because he fears reprisals, was with his girlfriend, when he saw a man “running for his life” past him.

The pair had crossed Merton High Street from the shops and were heading in the direction of south Wimbledon at the time.

He said: “I saw a guy running away and when I looked to see what he was running from there was a man with a gun pointing at him.

“Me and my girlfriend were in between him and the gunman.”

But the terror did not end there - he said the armed man followed the couple home, and he frantically dialled 999.

“As we briskly headed home after seeing that, we noticed the gunman following us.

“After going round the block we managed to lose him.

“I guess he was trying to intimidate us,” he added.

The alleged attempted shooting happened at about 4pm or 5pm on Saturday.

He said no shots were fired and he heard lots of police sirens and the sound of the police helicopter overhead a short time later.

The Metropolitan Police said they had an incident on record, and would send further details to this newspaper in due course.

The witness described the gunman as a young black man, wearing a grey hooded top and holding a ‘quite large’ black handgun.

He said the fleeing man was a black man in his early twenties, wearing a baseball cap and hooded top.
