After the offer is received, parents and carers have until May 3 to accept the place, and local authorities have until May 17 to let schools know who their new pupils will be.

All parents have the right to appeal and the appeals are usually heard within 20 to 40 days of notification of the refusal of the place.

There is a panel of three people who will hear the appeal, and explain why the decision was made.

The panel may decide to uphold the appeal if the members believe the criteria for the place allocation was not followed.

The decision will be sent to the parent and the local authority in five days and can only be overturned in court.
