A new project to help parents of gay and transgendered children in Croydon has been launched.

The Parenting Project will offer information and support for carers of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered children (LGBT).

It aims to help parents support their children and talk about problems surrounding being gay or transgendered.

The scheme also hopes to help children better relate to their parents.

As well as Croydon the Parenting Project will also be operating in Greenwich, Hackney and Southwark.

Ann Durbin, executive director of Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays which is working with the project, said: "For parents to be able to talk through these concerns, access accurate information and get support around LGBT issues is vital if they are to support LGBT family members. It's about helping people focus on what's important about a relationship rather than getting caught up about someone's sexual orientation or gender identity."
