A gay barman who was brutally murdered will be remembered with a memorial on Clapham Common.

Hundreds of bulbs and flowers will be planted on the spot where 6ft 4in Jody Dobrowski was beaten to death in a homophobic attack in October 2005.

Unemployed Thomas Pickford, 26, and decorator Scott Walker, 33, admitted killing Jody as he walked home from a friend's house around midnight.

They were told they would serve a minimum of 28 years in prison.

The men kicked and punched the 24-year-old in the face and forced one of his training shoes into his mouth to suffocate him.

His face was so badly disfigured he could only be identified by his fingerprints.

Jody's friends, police and Lambeth and Wandsworth councillors will gather near the bandstand on Clapham Common to remember Jody on May 17, International Day Against Homophobia.

French film Beyond Hatred, which looks at the trial of a homophobic murder, will be screened after the bulb-planting at Clapham Picture House at 7pm.
