Spectators who watched British wrestling favourites Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks battle it out at Fairfield Halls during the 1970s and 1980s are being urged to come forward.

Anyone who sat ringside during the golden era of British wrestling - filmed in Croydon before being televised to millions on Saturdays on ITV's World of Sport - is being urged to take part in a television programme which takes a nostalgic look at iconic television from 1979 to 1989.

It is thought the wrestling bouts were filmed in Croydon about once a month, featuring grapplers Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Superstar Mal' Saunders, Davie Fit' Finlay, Rollerball Rocco, Kendo Nagasaki and Bomber Pat Roach - who went on to appear in TV show Auf Weidersehn Pet.

The two giants of British wrestling were Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks who battled it out at the height of wrestling's popularity in this country.

Good-guy Big Daddy - real name Shirley Crabtree - never lost to his arch-enemy in more than 10 years of bouts. Perennial villain Haystacks - born Martin Ruane - was never allowed to take the pre-arranged grappling glory.

Big Daddy was famous for defeating opponents with his move the belly splash' to the chants of "Easy! Easy!" from kids and grannies.

However, it was this move which ended his career in 1987 when he splashed' Mal King Kong' Kirk who died soon after. Despite an inquest revealing Mal had a serious heart condition, Bid Daddy blamed himself and retired from wrestling.

Big Daddy died in 1997 while Giant Haysacks died in 1998.

One Heritage reader said: "Watching the pantomime-esque wrestling matches between Big Daddy and his arch-enemy Giant Haystacks is a fond reminder of my childhood.

"These shows were just as popular with adults as they were with kids - even my grandmother was an avid fan."

A production company making a third series of That's What I Call Television wants to hear from anyone who ever sat ringside to join a studio audience and relive the experiences on television.

A spokesman said: "If your gran ever battered Giant Haystacks with her handbag, if you ever chanted "Easy! Easy!" during a Big Daddy match or saw the unmasking of Kendo Nagasaki, we would love to hear from you."
