Croydon police launched its Safer Transport Team to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour on public transport last Friday.

Led by Sergeant Steve Brennan, 18 new police community support officers (PCSOs), at least two sergeants and a police constable, will provide a visible presence on buses, trams and trains to make passengers feel safer.

Borough commander, Chief Superintendent Mark Gore, said: "The Croydon Safer Transport team is a welcome addition to the policing family in this borough and in such a short space of time since its launch the team have received positive feedback from the local community.

"Its introduction is a further example of our continued efforts to make Croydon safer for those who live, work, or visit the borough."

The officers are part of a first wave of safer transport teams to be introduced throughout outer London and Steve Burton, Transport for London's deputy director of transport policing and enforcement, feels they will only help make Croydon safer.

He said: "This is great news for the people of Croydon who should feel reassured that we are all working hard to ensure travelling around the borough is both a safe and comfortable experience."
