Sunbury Liberal Democrats have been accused by the local Conservatives of "scaremongering" over the potential re-development of the police college site. The Tories have put out election pamphlets which attack the Liberal Democrats when all we are seeking to do is to raise awareness.
We have seen a number of developments in Spelthorne that have effectively been "done deals" by the time they have reached the public domain. A local Liberal Democrat asked one question at a council meeting to establish what was happening with the police college site. Only someone with something to hide would call this scaremongering.
What the Tories fail to appreciate is that what the public see is a council executive that makes decisions in secret and then announces them. This happens in planning, for example when deciding on the buildings to be constructed on the Benwell and Stanwell day centre sites.
The Liberal Democrats have sought to get answers from a secretive council over the last four years. Electing more Liberal Democrats on 3 May will raise the level of council accountability and introduce genuine consultation, instead of the current sham we experience.
