A gunman who orchestrated the shooting of his ex-girlfriend and her new partner has been jailed for 10 years.

Jarrell Francis, 22, forced his way into his former lover's South Croydon flat with his friend Zarak McKoy, who then shot the couple 16 times with a self-loading pistol.

McKoy, 24, of Hambrook Road, South Norwood, was jailed for life with a minimum of 10 years in March for his role in the shooting.

Francis had a heated argument through the door of his ex-girlfriend's Kingsdown Avenue flat on July 6 last year after she refused to allow him in because she feared for her safety.

Later he and McKoy returned armed with a converted Baikal IZH-79 firearm and forced their way into the flat before shooting the 20-year-old ex-girlfriend and her 19-year-old boyfriend in their bedroom.

The couple were said by police to have survived through "sheer luck".

McKoy was jailed in March following a trial at Croydon Crown Court

Police identified the two gunmen and McKoy was found in Mitcham on July 16.

But Francis, of Stockwell, went on the run was not arrested until April 8 this year. He later admitted the same charges and was jailed for 10 years yesterday.

Detective Constable Peter Whibley, of the Trident gang crime unit, said: "I am pleased that Francis and McKoy have both been jailed for a significant period of time.

"They both went out that morning intent on causing fear and intimidation and when the victim did not open the door, they forced their way into the address and without hesitation repeatedly shot the victim and her boyfriend.

"The injuries that both victims received were significant. Between them they received 16 gunshot wounds. It is sheer luck that they survived these injuries."
