Croydon FC 5
Faversham Town 1

Croydon thrashed a poor Faversham Town side to give themselves a slender chance of the title as the league season enters its final week.

The Trams' rivals Whitstable Town and VCD Athletic have a game in hand but if they fail to win their remaining two games and Croydon beat Hythe Town this Saturday, Dickson Gill's men will be champions.

Faversham's defending left a lot to be desired. Ray Freeman had already thrashed a good half chance just wide before Lee Kirby nabbed his first after six minutes.

The visitors had no time to react before Croydon doubled their lead.

Kirby galloped clear down the right, drew keeper Tony Diment and crossed for Ray Freeman who made no mistake tapping into an open goal.

A one-two between Tim Murdoch and the rampant Kirby led to the third goal, which the striker prodded home for his second of the game.

Freeman had just crashed a shot against the inside of a Faversham post before the visitors went up the other end and scored a goal out of nothing.

Freeman hit the woodwork again and Ryan Watts bounced one off the top of the crossbar.

It looked as if the scoring was over before substitute Marc Whiteman got in on the act with two late goals.

It was Kirby again racing free down the left that helped Whiteman get his first, both cross and finish were excellent.

And in the 90th minute, Whiteman grabbed Croydon's fifth when he executed a fabulous volley.

Croydon: Harwood, Bennett, Amaning, Dabrowa, Hill, Young, Murdoch, Kirby (Warner 85), Quarshie (Watts 73), John (Whiteman (80), Freeman.
