The members of an up-and-coming band recently signed to Ronnie Wood's record label have just moved to Streatham.

The Thirst, who were signed to the ex-Rolling Stone's label last November, have moved to the house, off Mitcham lane, to be close to their recording studios in nearby Fallsbrook Road.

The group is made of brothers Mensah and Kwame Cofi-Agyeman, who play electric guitar and bass and their school friends Mark Lenihan, the rhythm guitarist, and drummer Marcus Harris, who are all in their early 20s. The band's music is inspired by their Afro-Caribbean roots, old punk records, drum and bass and hip-hop.

The foursome, along with manager Kinsley Slater, met when they were just children at Sudbourne Primary School in Brixton. The band formed in 2003 and two years later they began practising at their recording studios in Fallsbrook Road, where they rehearse every day.

They played their first gig at Dogstar in Brixton and as they became better known, performed in a variety of venues, including Café de Paris and the Carling Academy.

But it was a gig late last year at their residency venue, the Jamm in Brixton, which changed their lives. Unbeknown to the band, a representative from Wooden Records was in the audience and promptly set up a gig at the Half Moon in Putney for the band to play for Ronnie Woods.

He liked their performance and signed them to Wooden Records, making them the label's only band.

The Thirst are now making their tracks with producer Jake Fior, who has worked with the Libertines and Babyshambles, and plan to release an album by the end of the year. They have also secured a place at the Isle of Wight festival in June.

"We don't want to be stereotyped as an urban band - we are just four boys playing the music we love," said Kingsley. "Music is universal and it's important to open it up for everybody.

"We want to change people's perceptions and first impressions of us and there's no better tool than music to do so."

The Thirst will appear at 9pm tomorrow at Babalou at St Matthew's Church in Brixton. They will also support Wolfman at Scala in King's Cross on May 3.
