Road safety campaigners are calling for a lower speed limit and safety cameras on the road where school girl Olivia McKie died after being hit by a bus.

Olivia, 11, was hit by the bus in Southcroft Road as it was travelling east towards Mitcham Lane on March 9.

More than 1,000 people have signed the petition calling for Southcroft Road and Amen Corner to be limited to 20mph.

Petition organiser Trevor Hutton said residents and shopkeepers were fed up with motorists speeding through their neighbourhood.

He said with schools in the area, traffic should be limited to 20mph, enforced by speed cameras.

Mr Hutton said Olivia's death was the last straw.

"So many others have died or have been severely hurt - pedestrians, car drivers, motorcyclists, scooter drivers - because of the poor road layout in Southcroft and Amen Corner," Mr Hutton said.

"Many drivers treat it as a race track seeing how fast they can drive through the chicanes.

"Standing on the corner of these chicanes is a nerve-racking experience for all, young and old."

Mr Hutton said the petition had attracted more than 1,000 signatures and expected the total number to top 2,000 by the time it was presented to the council.

He said he had spoken to the council's engineers and investigated different measures including speed cameras and signage.

A Wandsworth Council spokesman said its officers had spoken to Mr Hutton about his suggestions.

"We have met with Mr Hutton and discussed a round traffic and parking issues in the area and we are now looking in to some of the issues raised," the spokesman said.
