A teenager is in hospital after what police say was a hit-and-run in Epsom High Street.

The 14-year-old was hit as he and a 65-year-old used the pedestrian crossing opposite Starbucks in the high street about 3.20pm yesterday.

The black Peugeot 306 involved in the accident took off.

Detective Sergeant Steve Clancey said the 65-year-old received minor injures but the 14-year-old remains in hospital with serious ankle injuries.

"This was a serious and terrifying incident for those involved and we are keen for as many witnesses as possible to come forward to assist us with our enquiries," D Serg Clancey said.

"I would be particularly interested to hear from witnesses who saw a man run from Marks & Spencer's and get in to this vehicle."

A man and woman from The Greenway, Epsom, were arrested yesterday evening in connection the crash.

The 31-year-old woman was released without charge while a 37-year-old man, of no fixed abode, remains in custody at Staines police station.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact investigating officer Detective Constable Bex Humber at Epsom police on 0845 125 2222.
