A free guide to spending a penny in Elmbridge is now available to residents.

The 20-page pocket booklet will outline location, opening hours and facilities available at each public toilet in the east Elmbridge and mid-Surrey area.

In addition, it will include details of wheelchair access, car parking, if payment is needed and whether the toilet operates under the Radar National Key Scheme - which offers independent access for disabled people to around 7,000 locked public toilets around the country.

The guide has been produced by members of the public, working with Central Surrey Health.

Denise Raven, continence nurse specialist at Epsom General Hospital, said: "The national guide to public toilets is not the easiest volume to carry around in your handbag.

"The idea for this local guide is to help people who are out and about to locate a clean, accessible loo quickly and easily."

The guide will be especially useful for elderly and pregnant women and people with continence problems - which affects about six million adults in the UK.

Mrs Raven said: "Our continence service user group, which includes patients and families affected by the condition, is all too familiar with how it can curtail a person's lifestyle.

"Working together with them we have produced a guide which will help ease the stress of finding a loo at short notice."
