Motorsport enthusiasts will be racing to buy some of the most important Brooklands memorabilia when it goes under the hammer on May 19.

Charterhouse Auctions hosts the sale, which contains an array of collectables won and collected by the late Mr C T "Kit" Baker-Carr, who raced in Bentley's Mother Gun in the 1930s.

The jewel in the collection's crown is a 130mph Brooklands badge, one of only 16 issued during 28 seasons of racing at Brooklands.

Richard Bromell, auctioneer for Charterhouse, said: "When I viewed the collection, the hairs on my neck stood up.

"Kit Baker-Carr is a legendary hero and his Brooklands badge is the Holy Grail for any collector."

Other notable recipients of the highly-prized badge include land speed record holder John Cobb in his famous Napier-Railton car.

The collection is awash with motoring history, with such items as a Herbert Johnson's racing helmet and Kit's 15-carat Gold Star Trophy, won at the Whitsun Brooklands meeting on May 17, 1937.

There are also a number of personal items, including a Dunhill Bentley presentation cigarette lighter inscribed "Brooklands 7-8-33 Kit from Mother Gun", and a silver cigarette case with the family crest.

Richard Bromell said: "Kit, who worked for HM Bentley selling cars, was a keen smoker and no respectable racing driver would be without some smoking accessories in the 1930s.

"Both of Kit's seem to have had extensive use."

The collection, estimated to sell for over £10,000, is part of Charterhouse's auction of classic cars, automobilia and motorbikes on Saturday, May 19, in Sherbourne, Dorset.
