An Esher businessman is bringing St George's Day to Esher by launching his own English food and drink celebration.

Jonathan Dunne, who runs the Albert Arms, the restaurant George and the Albert Wine Company, wants people to celebrate Englishness on Monday in a positive and enjoyable way.

He said: "St Patrick's Day and Burns Night are celebrated with gusto, so it's about time England showed that it too is proud of its heritage.

"We hope this food and drink event will be an annual occurrence."

George, in Esher High Street, which has a recommendation in the Michelin Guide 2007 and is spearheading the celebrations.

Guests can enjoy a specially prepared St George's Day lunch for Monday, April 23, including York ham or Cornish rump of lamb, with St George's mushrooms and Surrey baby leaf, accompanied by English wine-tasting. Following that will be an English fruit spring pudding with vanilla honey.

The Albert Arms, which serves many English home-brewed ales, is kicking off the day by serving customers a full English breakfast.
