Over 50 people evacuated a smoke-filled tower block in Battersea on Saturday after fire broke out in a storeroom.

Firefighters were called to Turpin House on Strasburg Road at 7.17pm on April 21 after flats filled with smoke.

It was first thought that there was a fire in a kitchen, but nothing was found. Officers then worked their way down through the block until they discovered a storage area on the ground floor alight.

Residents left their homes as smoke had worked its way into most of the flats through gaps in pipes.

Three adult women were treated by London Ambulance for smoke inhalation and one of the women, who was in her 60s, was taken to hospital.

A fire engine from Battersea and two from Clapham were called to the scene and firefighters using breathing apparatus to put out the fire.

Watch man Larry Lawes said: "The fire itself was fairly small and easy to put out, but the big issue was the smoke."

The cause of the fire is being investigated by both the fire brigade and police.
