Julian Speroni will be handed two games to prove he can become Gabor Kiraly's successor at Selhurst Park.

The Argentinian has been the Eagles' reserve keeper for three years but has been handed a lifeline by boss Peter Taylor, who is preparing for life without the soon to be out-of-contract Kiraly.

"I don't know what is happening with Gabor at the minute, but I'm hoping to have a look at Julian for at least two of the remaining games to see whether he can stake a claim to be number one next year," said Taylor.

"I owe it to Julian and I owe it to myself. He played against Derby County and Sunderland this season and was consistent but then he injured his groin.

"To me, he looks a very good goalkeeper and he deserves a chance."

Kiraly, 30, can leave on a free transfer at the end of the season and, if he does stay at Palace, it would have to be on reduced terms, as the club must tighten their purse strings now they can no longer rely on Premiership parachute payments.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Hungarian international would want to stay in SE25 after publicly stating his desire to play at a higher level of football to force his way back into his national side.

Fellow Eagles keeper Scott Flinders has seen his loan spell with Brighton extended until the end of the season and Taylor has also informed the Guardian he hopes to extend David Wilkinson's stay at Palace.

It is set to be a busy summer for Taylor and chairman Simon Jordan, as they look to mastermind the Eagles' bid to get back into the Premiership.

Jordan has already promised a "summer shake-up" but Taylor hinted significant wholesale changes will not be on the agenda.

"I am seeing Simon in the early part of next week to talk about next year's budget, so that's when we will make decisions on players' futures," he said.

"I do not think it will be a summer shake-up. I look at the midfield, the wide areas and defence and we look good.

"But I have always wanted a bit of pace up front to play with a big man and maybe we need something else at the back."

Taylor also played down speculation surrounding Danny Butterfield's future.

"Danny is not out of contract like some people have suggested," he added.

"He has a year left so he will not be leaving on a free transfer."
