Beckenham will play host to korfball's brightest young talents at England Korfball's national youth day on Sunday.

The largest one-day competition for youth korfball players in the country gets underway at 10am and will see teams from as far afield as Norwich and Cambridge competing across five age categories at Club Langley in Hawksbrook Lane.

Young players will compete in the under 9, 11, 13, 16 and 19 age categories.

The London Korfball Association (LKA) will be hosting this event for the second year in a row.

Originating in the Netherlands, korfball is an eight-player team game unique in the fact it is designed to be played by both boys and girls on the same team.

The U9s age group will play in teams made up of four players.

Several London clubs will be sending sides which are Tooting-based Bec, Bromley, Croydon, Harrow Vultrix, Nomads (Epsom) and Trojans (Croydon).

Bromley’s U11s team is fresh from winning the Kent Cup last month and will be in high spirits going into the tournament on their own turf.

Organiser and LKA chair Karen Palfreyman said: “Korfball is a great sport for youngsters to compete in.

“We are delighted we are bringing this competition to the Bromley area.

“The sport teaches co-ordination, team work and is excellent for fitness which I recommend to anyone to take up, however young or old.

“This event is a great chance for youngsters to play against teams from across the country, develop their skills, but more importantly to enjoy themselves.”
