A new free school planned for Richmond has officially named its temporary site, despite project leaders announcing the proposal at a public meeting earlier this year.

Deer Park School will open at Richmond Adult Community College (RACC) this September while awaiting permission to develop the London House site in Lower Mortlake Road.

The school, which was granted approval by the Department for Education earlier this year, hopes to move into its permanent site at Easter 2017, subject to planning permission and building works ceasing.

Bellevue Place Education Trust (BPET), which will run the school, announced this week the RACC governing body had approved the creation of a temporary classroom, cloakroom and outdoor play area on the Parkshot site.

The school will take one reception class in September 2015 before taking a second intake in September 2016, with a view of both classes moving to the permanent side in spring 2017.

The proposal for the temporary site was also announced by Tom Legge, board director at BPET, at a public meeting in March which tried to address issues surrounding the proposed permanent school site.

Alison Colenso, headteacher of Deer Park School, said: "The school is very much looking forward to working with RACC for the mutual benefit of both parties.

"I know that families of children starting in reception in September will be delighted to hear this exciting news and we will be hosting a variety of events over the summer including our meet the team event, uniform measuring day and our family picnic."

Councillor Paul Hodgins, cabinet member for schools, said he was pleased the school had found a temporary home due to the increasing demand for places at primary schools.

He added: "Richmond primary schools are heavily oversubscribed and this new school will play a significant role in addressing the need for more places.

"I would like to thank RACC for agreeing to let the school use part of their site. I look forward to working closely with Deer Park and welcoming them into our family of schools within the borough."
