A huge pile of debris was left in the middle on a road in a dump-and-drive episode in Wallington.

Around 7.5 tonnes of debris was dumped near the brow of the hill near the junction with Rookwood Avenue from a lorry as it drove up Queenswood Avenue leaving behind a trail of building site trash this morning.

Police were called around 4.05am after a resident was woken by a loud noise. A spokesman for the police said it was one of the largest and most dangerous cases of fly tipping seen in Sutton.

It comes just days after travellers left a large amount of rubbish at a future primary school site in Hackbridge.

Included in the rubbish, which appears to be from a kitchen renovation, is a Christmas card containing what could be the culprit's name.

Your Local Guardian:

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of environment and neighbourhood committee, said: "This is a truly shocking case of flytipping in the borough.

"The dumping of tonnes of builders' waste on a residential street in the middle of the night is an appalling and cynical act.

"We are working with the police to identify where this builders' waste came from and are appealing for the householders to come forward so that we may identify these flytippers, whose actions on a public highway could have led to serious injury or loss of life."

The items have since been cleared by police and council workers.
