If ever the politicians need an understanding of why the British electorate is so dis-enamoured, bewildered and disillusioned with the political process in this country, they only need to look no further than the 1.8 million signatures on the Downing Street website for road tolls, for reading between the lines according to Douglas Alexander the transport minister, Tony Blair and his Government will take no notice of that public opinion.

Has this not the same hallmarks of the arrogance of the old' Tory party that got them kicked out of power in 1997? I feel that it has.

I therefore consider these politicians, who keep on professing on TV and in the press that they will listen to the people', do not really understand what they are saying when they utter these simple words. For the opposite happens.

But it is also concerning that the New' Tories have not voiced their opinion on this situation and that the media have not picked up on this.

Silence is a way that politicians always use to agree with something, so is the Conservative Party also in agreement with this legislation that will affect only the most vulnerable people within our society (the 10 million-plus people who are considered to be poor by certain economists) and leave the roads only for the minority rich?

If the toll roads scheme does go ahead therefore, I hope that the people will vote accordingly, as it is the only way that the message will ever get home to our elected representatives in the Commons.

My wish is that if only politicians would use their innovative imagination and look further than schemes that will totally fail in the end and where, I have to say, with yes' men and yes' women (the inner-elite) advising them, they will never be in a position to solve in any way the nation's ever-growing problems.
