Croydon Council is offering primary schools a free performance from Recycler the Rapping Robot in support of this year's Green Guardian school awards.

In a 45-minute routine Recycler will highlight the benefits of the three Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle.

Formerly known as Cycler, the robot was developed by Waste Watch, a national company that encourages the benefits of waste minimalisation and recycling. He is accompanied on his trips by a trained education officer who helps deliver the interactive experience.

Both the secondary and primary school categories of the awards are being sponsored by the council, which wanted a fun way to promote them and encourage more recycling in schools.

Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for streets and environmental services, said: "Encouraging the next generation to understand and practice good environmental habits is essential. The Green Guardian awards give high-profile recognition to efforts being made and show others what can be done."

The rapping robot will be performing from May 8 to May 11 and hopes to visit up to 12 schools. In the first instance he will be offered to schools that have already been nominated or are planning to do the recycling topic for the London Schools Environmental Award. If there are still spaces after that he will be available to schools who have just begun recycling activities.

The Green Guardian awards are a great way to congratulate a school for it's environmental work or encourage it to do more. To nominate simply go to greenguardian.co.uk, where full details of this and other awards are available.
