A Croydon man at the centre of a cancer diagnosis blunder at Mayday Hospital has died.

Ron Jones, 71, passed away after contracting an infection. His death was not connected to a complaint lodged with Mayday about the length of time it took to diagnose the killer disease.

The Croydon Guardian reported in June last year how the married dad and granddad claimed the cancer in his right lung, which was diagnosed on May 31, should have been picked up following an x-ray taken in January.

In August, Mr Jones, who also suffered from diabetes and high blood pressure, received an apology from Mayday bosses who admitted that x-rays taken in January were not dealt with properly.

He was told "more care and attention" should have been taken following the results of this x-ray which revealed a dark shadow on his lung. The cancer had not spread as a result of the error.

Following the apology, the London Road hospital urged him to get back in touch so that the complaint could be discussed further.

Mr Jones's family said the matter was being dealt with by a solicitor and that they were still waiting to hear from Mayday.
