Hampton & Richmond striker Ian Hodges says the confidence in his side will lead them to championship glory.

Hodges notched his 15th goal of the season, adding to Rob Paris's opener, in a 2-0 victory over promotion rivals AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

The Beavers' top scorer has played an integral role as Alan Devonshire's side have lost just once in 19 league games to climb up the table.

After Saturday's win, Hampton sit second in the Ryman Premier Division, one point behind Chelmsford City with a game in hand.

Hodges said it was a good feeling for the Beavers to be in control of their own league destiny.

He said: "I honestly think we are going to win it.

"The lads are confident and everyone is buzzing."

The 15-goal hitman has played down his contribution to the Beavers' promotion push.

"Yes, I score goals, but I do my fair share of defensive duties as well," he said.

"To be honest, I have not scored as many as I would have liked but everyone has chipped in this season.

"Rob has scored eight from the back, so there are goals coming from all over the pitch."

Hodge said he would look back to the 3-1 victory over Tonbridge Angels on March 17 as a pivotal moment should Hampton gain automatic promotion.

"We have bounced back well after losing to Bromley," he said.

"We had a couple of tricky draws against Horsham and Billericay Town and we were a bit nervous.

"But we got some luck against Tonbridge after they hit the bar and the post.

"We got that bit of luck that day and have not looked back."

Beavers manager Devonshire admitted Saturday's result had been a vital one.

The West Ham legend said: "Matt Lovett had only one save to make, so that is an indication of how well we played. That puts us second and it is in our hands now.

"We still have to play Chelmsford, which will be a massive game, but I happy with the way it is going."
