Croydon Megabowl looks set to close after owners Gala Coral Group started negotiating redundancy packages with staff.

The multi-million pound gaming company recently began a 30-day consultation period with its employees at the complex in Valley Park, Purley Way.

But staff have told the Croydon Guardian they are unhappy about the planned closure.

Manager Lucy Slayford, said: "When Megabowl went into administration in 2003 all the employees worked through thinking that any day the site could have been closed. We were all delighted when Gala Coral Group took over last April and thought our jobs were safe.

"But now we are being offered the minimum redundancy pay possible and because of that I face losing my home. I have a mortgage to pay, a three-year-old son to support and, with my husband also working here and losing his job, there is no way we can continue living where we are."

Ms Slayford said other staff at the bowling alley were "devastated" at the prospect of losing their jobs.

A spokeswoman for Gala Coral Group would not confirm the whether Megabowl would shut but admitted to being in talks with staff about redundancy packages.

She said: "We are currently in a consultation period with our staff, and have started a series of individual negotiations. As we are in a consultation period we cannot comment further at this stage."
