The driver of a red Nissan 200 had to be cut from his car after hitting trees beside the M3 at Thorpe, Egham, on Saturday.
Surrey Police said the car had been heading towards London when it left the road about 2.30pm.
A police spokesman said the driver was freed from the car by firefighters before being taken to hospital with serious head injuries.
A Surrey fire brigade spokeswoman confirmed three fire trucks had been sent to the crash on Saturday. She said they cut the man from the car between junctions two and three before he was taken to hospital.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.
